Antonio Tamburro


Antonio Tamburro was born in Isernia in 1948

After the studies at the School of Art, from 1966 he begun The Academy of Fine Arts of Naples, with master Giovanni Brancaccio.
Then he decides to quit it and to enrol himself at The Academy of Fine Arts of Rome with master Franco Gentilini. In 1968 he collaborates with the scene designer Filippo Senerchia; he realized for him a lot of painted parts of its set designs, one of the most important is exhibited at the Flavio Vespasiano theatre of Rieti.
In 1971 he paints the missing parts of the fresco realized from Trevisonno painter, in the S. Anna Church of Cantalupo del Sannio (IS). In the same year he realizes his first Personal exhibition at the Carboncino gallery of Campobasso where he starts to meets the emergent artists of that period. In 1972 he moves to Perugia where he makes his debut with his Personal exhibition at the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall). In these pictures there is an allusion of his origins, with a strong and violent chromatism typical of impressionists. In Perugia he meets and follows the “Cenacolo” cultural group. He participates at the art-exhibition with other artists of Umbria region.
In 1974 he shows in Milan in the La Porta gallery. In 1975 a Personal exhibition in the Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia.
In 1976 a Personal exhibition at La Ghironda gallery in Assisi where he proposes a series of sanguine drawings.
In 1977 he exhibits at the Cecchini gallery in Perugia under the theme of mental illness. In 1977 a Personal exhibition in Rimini at the “Galleria Malatestiana”.
In 1978 at Villa Olmo, through the Lario Cadorago Prize he meets a great patron of arts: Aldo Pollici, he will become his friend and his believer. In 1979 some of his works are published in the “Arte in Umbria” magazine edited by Siglatre.
In the same year he is called to teach at the School of Art in Spoleto. In 1981, even though he had a contract-at-will he decided to quit it to dedicate entirely himself to the paint. In 1981 is published an article in the national “Tempo Nostro” magazine. In 1982 he realizes a work on “Arte e Ferrovia”, (Art and railway) now this work is in the National Museum in Pietrarsa. In the same year an other Personal exhibition in Modena at “Galleria Emilia” where he begin to open a new theme about the environmental pollution. In coincidence, he published his first catalogue, presented by Giorgio Grando. This theme will be proposed also in the following exhibition, as in Perugia in the Sala del Grifo e del Leone of the Town Hall.
In 1982 he takes part in a collective exhibition at the Rocca Paolina in Perugia under the title “The cooperation and the crisis of the society”, in the same year an other collective exhibition “Meetsing with five painters” organized by the Municipality of Spilanbergo. In 1983 he takes part in a collective exhibition in the Tendostruttura of Todi. In 1983 through the Marina di Ravenna Prize he meets Domenico Purificato, Gastone Breddo and Remo Brindisi. In 1984 he takes part in an exhibition called “Itineraries, research and mysteries in the art, contemporary artists of Umbria”, with Alberto Burri, Giuseppe De Gregorio, Rambaldi and others, in Granicolo Centro D’arte. In the same year he realizes a monumental masterpiece for the hall of the Armatura of the Tre F Italia School, showing “Seneca and his students”, where the artist paint himself.
In 1984 he meets the Mantignana Community. His first commission is the Baldo Marcarelli portrait, founder of the Cassa Rurale Artigiana. Then he realizes a very big size painting about the cooperation between arts and crafts, for the Bank. In 1985 Mantignana orders a work for S. Maria Assunta Church, a fresco about the crucifixion and the crowning of the Virgin.
In 1984 he knows Giorgio Ghelfi, specialized in galleries, with whom he begin an important collaboration, realized under an exhibition in Verona, in the Piazza Erbe gallery, under the critical text of Marcello Venturoli.
In 1985 he creates in Bornio a murales under the title “the sky”. In the same year CGIL order a regional poster for the 25th of April (National Holyday). This one is exhibited at the “Graffiti-presenza sindacale” show (Graffiti-trade union presence) at Rocca Paolina in Perugia. In 1986 in Rome a Personal exhibition in Consorti gallery in Via Margutta in Rome and the same show exhibited at the Consorti gallery in Perugia.
In 1986 some of his works are published on Vogue magazine.
In the same year an other exhibition at the Ghelfi gallery in Verona. In 1987 at Margherita gallery in Taranto. In the same year he meets the painter Stefano Cavallo, who introduces him into the environment of arts of Puglia. He meets also Angelo Coltella, specialized in galleries, with him he established a friendship and an intense cooperation. With Angelo Coltella he will does an exhibition at the MG Gallery of Art in Brindisi. Then they realize big size works for the Rosamarina Grand Hotel in Ostini and also at the oil mill in Monopoli. In 1988 participates at a collective exhibition in Villa Olmo in Como. In 1988 again, he starts a series of works about bicycles, followed by the catalogue titled “Le biciclette di Tamburro” (Tamburro Bicycles) edited by Jean Pierre Jouvet. Thanks to the exit of the catalogue the artist knows the journalist Adriano De Zan, who invited him at Giro d’Italia and at the TV show Il Processo del Lunedì (Italian foot-ball programme), where he participates as jury with Corrado Augias.
In the monthly La Bicicletta magazine (The bicycle) Vittorio Sermarini wrote an article titled “Quadri di Bicicletta” (Bicycle paints). In 1988, again under the theme of bicycles, on the book wrote by Giovanni Tarello “Un secolo di uomini e cose” (A century of men and things), are published some of his works. In the same year two important exhibitions: one in Milan at the Il Torchio gallery and in the monumental space of the S. Giorgetto Church in Verona.
1989- Mondadori edited a monograph of him in the “Presenze” collection, with critic of Dario Micacchi and a testimony of Alberto Sughi. In 1989 a catalogue about the theme of suburbs, presented by Franco Solmi.
In 1990 Spadolini Foundation order to the artist a Giovanni Spadolini portrait.
In 1991 meets the artists of Rome environment. As Ennio Calabria, Alberto Sughi, Renzo Vespignani, the photographer Pino Settanni; this one publishes a picture of the painter in his photo book “La memoria e le immagini” (memory and images), book dedicated to the personalities of cinema and culture.
In 1991 takes part in the Arte Fiera in Bologna, with Ghelfi gallery, in this fair he meets painter Orfeo Tamburi.
In 1991 Brindisi Municipality organizes for him a Personal exhibition with presentation and critic of Mario Colonna.
In 1993 exhibition with sculptor Nag Arnoldi in the monumental complex Le Zitelle, in Venice.
In 1993, with the patronage of the Pesaro Provincial Administration, the Signorotti gallery present his Personal exhibition, with critic text of Luciano Bertacchini. In the same year he takes part in the jury in the review “La modella nell’arte” (the model woman in the art) and “Arte in Villa” (Art in Villa) organized by Spilanberto Municipality.
In 1994, a Personal exhibition at Transit gallery in Bergamo, with the presentation of the catalogue of Carlo Franza and an other Personal at Marzabotto Arte gallery.
1994- Some of his works are published on a magazine of critics and news “Viaggio nel mondo delle Arti visive dal fascismo ad oggi” (Voyage in the world of art from fascism to nowadays).
1995- Personal at Il torchio gallery in Milan.
1996- Collective “Pianeta Donna” (Woman planet). A.P.T. (Office for tourist promotion) of Montecatini Terme.
1996- Personal at Consorti gallery, theme “Il caffè” (the coffee).
1996- Personal at Piazza Erbe gallery in Verona. Critical text by Francesco Butturini.
Thanks to his friend Mario Mognetti, tireless and capable director of Piazza Erbe gallery (Verona), 1996 for the artist, is the year of the American Market.
1996- Personal at Teodora gallery in Toronto.
1999- Personal at Padua Art Gallery in Padova.
1999- ARGAM Rome Spring, with the patronage of the councillor responsible of the cultural politics of Rome.
In 2002 in the monthly Arte Mondadori magazine, the artist is presented in an article about the protagonists of the contemporary paint titled “Il solitario della pittura” (solitary in paint). Signed by Francesco Cardea.
In 2003 during the Notte Bianca of Rome (White Night), the artist takes part in the collective in the Michelangelo gallery with Calabria, Sughi, Matta, Accardi.
2003- ARGAM Rome Spring, on “Mitologia all’immaginazione” (mythology of imagination at Michelangelo gallery in Rome.
2003- “Due generazioni a confronto” (comparison between two generations). Studio 4 gallery of Molfetta and Padua Art Gallery in Padova. With his son Marco.
In 2003 at the Michelangelo gallery is presented an exhibition with the big size works of the artist. 2003 is the year of the foreign Personal exhibitions.
2003- Villa de l’Arte gallery in Barcelona.
2003- Ruetz gallery in Monaco.
2003- Ruetz gallery in Ausburg.
In the monthly German magazine of art is published an article about these last two exhibitions.
In the 2003 the Associazione Segantini of Savognin in Switzerland invited the artist for a Personal exhibition in the Segantini hall, guest of his friend and collector Pietro Peduzzi. Here the artist goes back to the places where Giovanni Segantini painter lived.
In January 2004, an article on the magazine “Altri Itinerari del Molise” (Other itineraries of Molise).

In the same year the artist realizes for Gazzetta dello Sport (Italian newspaper of sport) the logo of the pink t-shirt, famous symbol of the 90° Giro d’Italia (Italian tour)
